Controlled freezing and thawing of pharmaceutical products
FARRAR® blast freezers are specially designed to quickly and safely freeze samples and products in medical facilities, scientific laboratories and the pharmaceutical industry. These devices reach temperatures as low as -85 °C and are ideal for preserving biological samples such as blood, plasma, tissue and genetic material, ensuring their stability for future studies. Through forced air circulation, our blast freezers enable efficient and uniform cooling, which optimizes the freezing process and prevents the formation of harmful ice crystals. In addition, precise control of the freezing and thawing processes ensures maximum uniformity and repeatability, making them a reliable choice for demanding laboratory applications.
Perform freezing processes in hours instead of days
With our blast freezers, you can freeze and thaw samples repeatably, precisely and quickly. The unique convection-based, controlled freezing and thawing process eliminates uncertainty and enables temperature-specific conditioning to meet processing and shipping protocols for pharmaceutical products.
-
Wide temperature range for almost any application (-80 ˚C to +40 ˚C)
-
Forced air convection cooling for fast cooling; water-cooled options available
-
Consistent, repeatable results for quality control
-
Cycle start/stop with +/-1 ˚C product temperature tolerance
-
The freezer is capable of cooling 100 liters of load to -80 °C in <12 hours.
Air convection cooling for maximum performance
When it comes to freezing or thawing samples, speed and efficiency are crucial. One way to achieve this is forced air circulation, which not only quickly freezes the samples to the desired temperature, but also ensures uniform cooling throughout the container. This method also avoids false freezing points, making it a reliable option for processing and shipping various drugs or substances.
Forced air circulation is not only effective, but also extremely versatile: it is suitable for containers of different types and sizes, such as carboys, disposable bags, bottles or racks of vials. The technology can also be configured to meet the specific requirements of different batches.
To further optimize the process, solid phase conditioning is used to maximize the heat of fusion to achieve greater energy storage and the longest cooling capacity over time. Finally, flexible material handling solutions are available to ensure smooth and efficient handling of both the process and the containers.
Concrete advantages of our convection blast freezer:
- Easy chamber set-up and control/use of one of three freeze/thaw profiles
- No in-process containers or trays required
- Adjustable shelves to optimize the process
- Enables fast, efficient, controlled freeze/thaw process
- Enables fast, uniform freezing/thawing of proteins or products
- Increases yields by 40-90% and reduces the freeze/thaw phase to hours instead of days or weeks
- Ensures reproducible results

Blast freezing in the pharmaceutical industry
Blast freezing plays a crucial role in the pharmaceutical industry and is becoming increasingly important. As an important method for preserving and maintaining the quality of pharmaceutical products, it enables safe storage and long-term use.
By using flash freezing, pharmaceutical products are quickly cooled to extremely low temperatures, often as low as -85 °C. This rapid cooling process helps to prevent the formation of large ice crystals that could damage the cell structure and efficacy of the products. Preventing such damage ensures the quality, stability and integrity of pharmaceutical samples.
Blast freezing is used for a variety of pharmaceutical products such as drugs, vaccines, enzymes, cell therapy products and biological samples. It enables a longer shelf life and maintains the effectiveness of the products over a longer period of time. This is particularly important when it comes to sensitive active ingredients and biological materials that are susceptible to degradation and degeneration.
Compliance with quality standards and regulations, such as Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP), is of great importance for blast freezing in the pharmaceutical industry. These guidelines ensure that samples are handled in a controlled environment to guarantee the purity, efficacy and safety of pharmaceutical products.
