Vacuum Pumps

The key factor in vacuum drying is to ensure the correct vacuum. Many different types of vacuum pumps available to achieve this for specific drying purposes. In practice, for the majority of the time we deal with only two types of pumps:


Oil Vacuum Pump

Characteristics of the oil vacuum pump, suitable for using in our dryer:

Oil Vacuum Pump

Final vacuum: 10-2 mbar
Number of stages: 2

Oil vacuum pumps are the most frequently used types and the most favorable in price. They can easily achieve a vacuum as low as 1 mbar, sometimes even lower. They are robust and very durable if properly maintained, however, there are some drawbacks. Oil vacuum pumps are usually not chemical-resistant, making a steam condenser necessary when used for drying aggressive media. Otherwise, these aggressive media can damage vital parts of the pump, the oil quality can drastically deteriorate requiring a regular change of oil and the pump will require more frequent cleaning.


Chemical resistant membrane Vacuum Pump

Characteristics of the chemical resistant vacuum pump, suitable for use with our dryer:

Final vacuum: 2 mbar
Number of stages: 3

This pump is chemical-resistant and enables aggressive media to dry, as it is 'dry running' and does not use oil for lubrication. This considerably extends the maintenance intervals. The membrane pump has a standard, in-built glass liquid collector on the exhaust duct, which prevents the condensed liquid from entering the pump. There is also a pair of in-built insulated glass condensers on the exhaust side, which can be cooled with water, and thereby providing efficient condensation and collection of exhaust fumes.
No oil lubrication also means no oil fumes left in the exhaust. Despite the multi-stage construction, the vacuum can reach down to 2 mbar.
